Earthquakes on Your Mind?

Come see what your community is doing to be prepared in the event of a major disaster. you are invited to participate in the Seattle Emergency Communications Hubs Drill this Saturday, June 11, 9 AM – noon (see location & time details below) Join your neighbors in a simulated earthquake neighborhood response drill of the Seattle Emergency Communications Hubs. The larger Cascadia Rising Drill, conducted by state, county and city agencies is running all this week, and Ballard is doing its part to be prepared by conducting drills at Ballard Commons Park and Ballard Shilshole Marina this Saturday.

Stop by and ask to be “put to work”. Volunteering as a Citizen Actor, you will draw a short script from the Bowl of Misfortunes and put the crew to the test. Your participation will test how the team accomplishes their mission and will help you learn how you can be ready to help in the event of a disaster!

We had a great turnout for Adopt A Street Cleanup along 14th Ave NW last Saturday. Even though the weather was iffy, we had 28 volunteers walk along 14th Ave NW between NW 65th all the way to Shilshole Ave and collect 13 bags of trash, 23 bags of yard waste and 1 lawn mower engine! Plucky neighbors also got out the shears and pruned down the shrubs in the median south of NW 58th to improve visibility. Many of the shrubs in the planters north of 58th were pruned as well. All this accomplished in just 3 hours!

Tell your neighbors and Friends! See ya this Saturday 10am-1pm for Adopt A Street Clean up along 14th Ave NW. Meet us at Blowing Sands Glass (corner of 14th Ave NW and NW 58th St), meet your neighbors over a cup of coffee and help clean up your neighborhood!

Join Groundswell NW this Saturday, May 7 from 10AM-11:30AM for a leisurely Jane’s Walk tour through the West Woodland/East Ballard neighborhood. Jan Satterthwaite, landscape architect and Groundswell NW board member will guide you on a walking journey through NW Seattle, looking at how the built and natural environment shapes the experience of wildlife and people sharing our neighborhoods. Together, you will discover unique local plants of use for wildlife and share wildlife experience stories. The tour will start at the West Woodland Elementary (5601 4th Ave NW) playground rain garden. From there  you will walk approximately 4 blocks to the East Ballard rain gardens on 11th Ave NW/NW 57th St. From there you will walk about 12 blocks to the 11th Ave NW Street End Park and then circle back to West Woodland Elementary. The grade is flat most of the way, so the habitat crawl should be easy for most salamander and small mammal-types.

Join your neighbors on Saturday May 14 for EBCA’s biannual Adopt A Street Cleanup. We’ve been cleaning up 14th Ave NW since the Fall of 2005 thanks to your help and our incredible volunteers who organize this event. Picking up trash is a lot more fun than it sounds and is something the whole family can do together. This is a great opportunity to make our neighborhood a nicer place to live. Plus you get to wear a brightly colored EBCA logo vest! We’re looking forward to seeing you Saturday May 14 from 10am-1pm at the corner of 14th Ave NW and NW 58th at Blowing Sands Glass. Coffee and treats from Ballard Market will be on hand to keep you well-fueled!

Seattle Department of Transportation is building a network of greenways and are now studying a potential route connecting Historic Ballard to the Burke-Gilman Trail. Join the conversation and attend the first of two project public meetings.

Construction of the Ballard Neighborhood Greenway along 17th Ave NW is nearly complete

There are still a few minor tasks to complete along the greenway so you may still see crews in the area. Work includes:

• Finish sign installation and road striping
• Make drainage repairs at the northeast corner of 17th Ave NW and NW 65th St
• Install additional signs on 17th Ave NW at NW Market St to further clarify new traffic restrictions at this intersection
• The US Post Office will relocate the mail drop box at NW 57th St and 17th Ave NW to the safety island
• Seattle City Light will turn on the new signal at NW Dock Pl and Leary Ave NW

Seattle Public Utilities begins construction for the Ballard Natural Drainage project this spring.
