Name for the 14th Ave NW Park announced by Seattle Parks

blockparty

It takes gemanskap to build a park!

Readers may remember that back in March, Seattle Parks and Recreation asked the community to submit name suggestions for the 14th Ave NW Park. The Park naming committee received over 60 unique name suggestions and after long deliberation announced their decision in a press release yesterday afternoon.

The new name for the 14th Ave NW park will be Gemenskap Park (pronounced Yuh-MEN-skawp), which is the Swedish word for community. The name was chosen “because this was a community initiated project and because of the area’s Swedish history and influence, the Park Naming Committee believes this unique park will help build community by turning parking into park space. While there are several Ballard parks that have Norwegian names, this is the first with a Swedish name.”

Now that the park has a name, let’s hope that it’s a good sign that the City will be breaking ground in the near future! We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

An awesome turnout for last Saturday’s Adopt A Street Cleanup

We had a great turnout for Adopt A Street Cleanup along 14th Ave NW last Saturday. Even though the weather was iffy, we had 28 volunteers walk along 14th Ave NW between NW 65th all the way to Shilshole Ave and collect 13 bags of trash, 23 bags of yard waste and 1 lawn mower engine! Plucky neighbors also got out the shears and pruned down the shrubs in the median south of NW 58th to improve visibility. Many of the shrubs in the planters north of 58th were pruned as well. All this accomplished in just 3 hours!

The Seattle Foundation has organized the biggest-ever “day of giving” called giveBIG to raise money for local nonprofits. We’re asking you to giveBIG TODAY to support EBCA’s mentor organization and nonprofit fiscal sponsorGroundswell NW.

Your tax-deductible donation to Groundswell NW through Seattle Foundation’s giveBIG event today will support Groundswell NW’s mission to empower NW Seattle to create, activate and care for parks, open space and habit. Supporting Groundswell NW today will enable them to continue providing mentorship, fiscal support and advocacy for community groups like the EBCA.

All contributions to Groundswell NW will be matched proportionally during this 24 hour period – in other words, the more friends and supporters like you who give to Groundswell NW, the more The Seattle Foundation will stretch those gifts from their own GiveBIG pool, increasing the impact of every donation made today (May 3).

Please show your support for the East Ballard Community Association and Groundswell NW today!

Jane’s Walk Habitat Crawl – Saturday May 7

butterfly

Join Groundswell NW this Saturday, May 7 from 10AM-11:30AM for a leisurely Jane’s Walk tour through the West Woodland/East Ballard neighborhood. Jan Satterthwaite, landscape architect and Groundswell NW board member will guide you on a walking journey through NW Seattle, looking at how the built and natural environment shapes the experience of wildlife and people sharing our neighborhoods. Together, you will discover unique local plants of use for wildlife and share wildlife experience stories. The tour will start at the West Woodland Elementary (5601 4th Ave NW) playground rain garden. From there  you will walk approximately 4 blocks to the East Ballard rain gardens on 11th Ave NW/NW 57th St. From there you will walk about 12 blocks to the 11th Ave NW Street End Park and then circle back to West Woodland Elementary. The grade is flat most of the way, so the habitat crawl should be easy for most salamander and small mammal-types.

For more information about this walk and more happening throughout Seattle during the weekend, check out the official Jane’s Walk site at: http://janeswalk.org/.

Mark your calendar for Adopt A Street Cleanup along 14th Ave NW on Sat May 14

Join your neighbors on Saturday May 14 for EBCA’s biannual Adopt A Street Cleanup. We’ve been cleaning up 14th Ave NW since the Fall of 2005 thanks to your help and our incredible volunteers who organize this event. Picking up trash is a lot more fun than it sounds and is something the whole family can do together. This is a great opportunity to make our neighborhood a nicer place to live. Plus you get to wear a brightly colored EBCA logo vest! We’re looking forward to seeing you Saturday May 14 from 10am-1pm at the corner of 14th Ave NW and NW 58th at Blowing Sands Glass. Coffee and treats from Ballard Market will be on hand to keep you well-fueled!
