Play Streets in East Ballard

playstreets11

This past year, Seattle Department of Transportation kicked off a pilot program to introduce Plays Streets in Seattle.

A play street closes a neighborhood street to traffic so that kids (and adults) can have more space for play and physical activity. School play streets provide additional space for recess or other special activities, like a field day. Community play streets help neighbors create more space for play during the summer or after school.

The summer has been successfully kicked off and we’ve heard that a very successful community play street along NW 58th St between 11th and 14th Ave NW has started up again this week and neighbors are inviting families in the ‘hood to join them and see what it’s like. Maybe it’ll inspire you to start up your own play street!

When: Every Thursday 5:30pm-9pm
Where: NW 58th St between 11th and 14th Ave NW
What: Come meet your neighbors, let the kids play in the street. Bicycles are welcome especially since it’s along the Greenway!

According to the Play streets map, there are a few more in the neighborhood. If you’d like us to help spread the word, please contact us!

An awesome turnout for last Saturday’s Adopt A Street Cleanup

We had a great turnout for Adopt A Street Cleanup along 14th Ave NW last Saturday. Even though the weather was iffy, we had 28 volunteers walk along 14th Ave NW between NW 65th all the way to Shilshole Ave and collect 13 bags of trash, 23 bags of yard waste and 1 lawn mower engine! Plucky neighbors also got out the shears and pruned down the shrubs in the median south of NW 58th to improve visibility. Many of the shrubs in the planters north of 58th were pruned as well. All this accomplished in just 3 hours!

Check out the pics in our Flickr album to see all the fun we had! Be sure to click on the individual photos to read the captions. Thank-you neighbors and we’re looking forward to seeing you again in October for our next Adopt A Street Clean up event!

Jane’s Walk Habitat Crawl – Saturday May 7

butterfly

Join Groundswell NW this Saturday, May 7 from 10AM-11:30AM for a leisurely Jane’s Walk tour through the West Woodland/East Ballard neighborhood. Jan Satterthwaite, landscape architect and Groundswell NW board member will guide you on a walking journey through NW Seattle, looking at how the built and natural environment shapes the experience of wildlife and people sharing our neighborhoods. Together, you will discover unique local plants of use for wildlife and share wildlife experience stories. The tour will start at the West Woodland Elementary (5601 4th Ave NW) playground rain garden. From there  you will walk approximately 4 blocks to the East Ballard rain gardens on 11th Ave NW/NW 57th St. From there you will walk about 12 blocks to the 11th Ave NW Street End Park and then circle back to West Woodland Elementary. The grade is flat most of the way, so the habitat crawl should be easy for most salamander and small mammal-types.

For more information about this walk and more happening throughout Seattle during the weekend, check out the official Jane’s Walk site at: http://janeswalk.org/.
